What is 304 stainless steel?

Its name comes from the American AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) standard, and 304 is its grade. The main components of 304 stainless steel are chromium and nickel. By adding these alloying elements, stainless 304 can maintain stable performance in a variety of environments, especially in oxidizing media. It performs well and is the so-called “universal stainless steel”.

Chemical Composition

304 stainless steel is mainly composed of iron, chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni).

The standard composition includes about 18% chromium and 8% nickel, so it is also called 18/8 stainless steel.

In addition, it may contain trace amounts of other elements such as carbon (C), molybdenum (Mo), copper (Cu), silicon (Si), niobium (Nb), titanium (Ti), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), calcium (Ca) and tellurium (Te), which can affect its performance and processing characteristics.

304 vs 316 stainless steel
